One seldom finds anything more powerful than the determination of a loving father to make a better life for his family. That’s precisely what Alfredo did—provided a better life for his family through the gift of literacy and reading.
Alfredo’s family attended a family literacy program in North Carolina. While Alfredo had to balance work with learning, his commitment to the program was nothing short of phenomenal. Alfredo brought his whole family to the program: his wife, Modesta, and two sons, Zabdiel (age 5) and Abisai (age 2). Their attendance record was stellar.
“I know that my boss, he believes in me that I will get the job done. When I can read better in English, I am better at my job, too, so he likes that my family comes to these classes.
When Alfredo had to work late, he drove his family to the program in time for the dinner, then he left without eating and went back to finish his work. He was sometimes a few minutes late for class, but he always returned.
Alfredo expressed to us how happy he was that his employer allowed him to pursue an education for his family through this program.“I know that my boss, he believes in me that I will get the job done. When I can read better in English, I am better at my job, too, so he likes that my family comes to these classes,” he said. “This program has helped me to see how important education is to my family, but especially my two sons.”
