The special performance, part of the Foundation’s 30th anniversary events, is based on Meacham and McGraw’s best-selling book, “Songs of America: Patriotism, Protest, and the Music that Made a Nation”

Washington, D.C. (October 10, 2019) — The Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy today announced that Grammy award winner Tim McGraw and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Jon Meacham will join its National Celebration of Reading on Nov. 12 in Washington, D.C., for a special performance based on their best-selling book, Songs of America: Patriotism, Protest, and the Music that Made a Nation.

The book, released in June, explores American history through music – from founding father John Dickinson’s 1768 “Liberty Song” to the music of 9/11. Meacham and McGraw will offer unique perspectives on the role music has played in uniting and shaping our nation before McGraw performs a song from the book.

“We are thrilled that Tim and Jon will join us to help honor Mrs. Bush’s legacy with this special performance at the National Celebration of Reading,” said British A. Robinson, president and CEO of the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy. “Their deep pride in this country is unmistakable in their commitment to sharing the stories – and songs – of its people. Their presence will help draw long-overdue attention to the 36 million adults who have unmet literacy needs.”

The National Celebration of Reading will gather members of the Bush family, best-selling authors, philanthropists, education and business leaders and others to raise awareness of our country’s adult literacy crisis, raise funds in support of the Foundation’s work and celebrate the life-changing power of literacy. Funds raised from the event will help the Foundation continue to expand family literacy services to parents and children across the United States. In addition to McGraw and Meacham, the event will feature best-selling and award-winning guest authors Jean Case, Jesse J. Holland, Eric Motley, Susan Orlean and Delia Owens.
