Successful Readers Celebrate National Mentor Month

ttOur quest to ensure every third-grader reads on grade level gets a big bang every January when National Mentor Month comes around.  Alex and Demond are part of our Teen Trendsetters™ Reading Mentors program that promotes reading, leadership and community service.   Our volunteer teen mentors spend one-on-one time each week with 1st, 2nd, and 3rd graders who struggle with reading.  Just this month we’ve launched 12 new Teen Trendsetters programs in Miami-Dade, Florida through a partnership with the Children’s Trust.    Watch this video of Alex and Demond, from Touching Miami with Love, in action as they share a story and smiles of sweet success.

Teen Trendsetters is one of the most cost-effective youth mentoring programs. It takes just $300.00 per match to provide the books, training and materials needed to establish a partner program between a high school and elementary school.  Local businesses, individuals and civic groups interested in helping more young people improve their literacy level can contact us at info@barbarabush.org  about sponsoring a program(s) in your community or state.

During Teen Trendsetters mentoring sessions, students focus on books and activities related to science, including weather, animals and famous scientists. Our mentors and mentees often share a common ethnic background and live in the same neighborhoods. In fact, 55% of our mentors are minority while our minority mentee population is 63%. Research shows mentor relationships that are ethnically and culturally relevant are far more impactful to mentees.

This year, over 3,000 high school and elementary school students are benefiting from Teen Trendsetters. A newly released national report, The Mentoring Effect: Young People’s Perspectives on the Outcomes and Availability of Mentoring, illustrates the powerful, long-term impact of youth mentoring.  Learn more about the Teen Trendsetters program and the great impact we are having on America’s youth at BarbaraBush.org.
